A Javanese woman applying wax in patterns that are participating in a canting (tjanting), a small copper bowl with a long thin beak. From time to time, beating on the tip of the canting to ensure easy flow of wax.

Areas that are not intended for coloring are presented with the wax. The fabric is then passed through a vat of dye.
