Malaysia Events and Festivals 2008

After the success of Visit Malaysia Year 2007, the Ministry of Tourism has decided to extend the campaign for the year 2008. Together with this extension are Malaysia for many events that will be carried out for visitors like you to choose and participate in. Join and participate in some events if you’re around to make your visit to Malaysia a time unforgettable.

JANUARY
23 January 2008 : Thaipusam
This is a religious festival for the Hindus which draw visitors and foreigners. The main celebration is held in Batu Caves, Selangor.

FEBRUARY
1-2 Feb 2008 : Sauk Sotong Langkawi 2008 (Squid Fishing Fiesta)
Organised by Tourism Langkawi, this squid fishing fiesta main attraction is to find out who got the biggest squid. Prizes await the winners at this fun-filled island of Langkawi in Kedah.

7-8 Feb 2008 : Chinese New Year
This auspicious occasion is celebrated for 15 days by the Chinese of Malaysia. Other races join in the celebration by attending open houses throughout the country. Large scale open houses are organised with plenty of food for everyone to enjoy. This is one of the major Malaysia events that you should join.

8 Feb - 31 Dec 2008 : Genting International Show
This show will be held in Genting Highlands, the city of entertainment up in the hills of Pahang. Shows include the world class performances of illusions, acrobats, dances and showcase of exotic animals.

9 Feb - 17 Feb, 2008 : Le Tour de Langkawi 2008
Similar to Le Tour De Frnce, this annual event will bring together the best cyclists in the world to compete in Malaysia. Langkawi Island will be the starting point with the ending venue at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur.

3 Feb 2008 : Langkawi Ironman Triathlon 2008
See the 300 participants compete against one another as they swim for 3.8km, bike race for 180.3km and marathon running for 43.3km in the duty free beautiful island of Langkawi. This event has been certified as among the toughest in the world.

MARCH
1-24 March 2008 : KL Grand Prix City
This month long event is held in conjunction with Petronas Malaysian F1 Grand Prix that will be held form 21-23 March 2007. Many entertaining and exciting exhibitions will be held in the city of Kuala Lumpur. Many shopping discounts will also be offered in various shopping complexes especially in Bukit Bintang area from 14-23 March, 2008.

21-23 March 2008 : Petronas Malaysian F1 Grand Prix 2008
This premier season opener Formula One is held annually in Sepang during the tropical heat of the day. Come and see the excitement and roaring sound of the world class cars from Ferari, BMW, Toyota, Honda etc. This is one of the major Malaysia events that you should join if you are into car racing.

24-27 March 2008 : World Amateur Inter-Team Golf Championship

4-5 April 2008 : Genting International Jazz Festival
This event will be held in Genting Highlands where international jazz performances will be held during this two days of April. Head for Genting and have a good time there.

4-6 April 2008 : Langkawi Water Festival 2008 (Malaysia Water Festival 2008)
Held in Langkawi, this water festival is a 3-day event with over 50 water sports and beach games. Head for this island and you could prizes and lucky draws.

6 April 2008 : Port Dickson International Half Marathon 2008

19-20 April 2008 : 15th Regatta Lepa Semporna – Water Festival

19-27 April 2008: Labuan International Sea Challenge (Malaysia Water Festival 2008)

31 August 2008 : Merdeka Month Celebration
This day commemorates Malaysia’s 51st year of independance or ‘Merdeka’ in Malay Language. See the open air concert on the eve of Merdeka day on 30 August. The colourful parade will be held on the morning of the Merdeka Day. The Merdeka day celebration is held in every major city in Malaysia.
